Ordinary: Function/ program and form of the item in its context

A variety of different types of chairs looking at the function/ program and form of the item in its context.

The Barstool Chair

Function in its context: Barstools are a type of stool often with a foot rest which, because of their height and narrowness, are designed for seating in a public houses or bar. However, barstools are becoming more popular in homes, usually placed at the kitchen counter or at a home bar. Barstools are becoming more popular because their varied styles not only are more appealing than the common wooden bar stool but actually accentuate the theme of a home. Bar stools allow for a higher view when eating, drinking, or socializing and can add to the atmosphere, given the right bar stool. here are many different constructions.

Materials and form: Barstools are often made of wood or metal. There are bar stools with and without armrests, back, and padding on the seat surface. Barstools can range from basic wooden designs to extremely detailed ones with a custom height for the perfect fit. Extra tall and extra short are common features, as well as indoor bar stools and outdoor bar stools. Some bar stools have backs, while most do not.

The Bench Chair

Function in its context: A bench is a piece of furniture, on which several people may sit at the same time. In public areas, benches are often donated by persons or associations, which may then be indicated on it, e.g. by a small plaque. Some hobos sleep on benches as beds, because they have no where else to go.

Materials and form: Benches are typically made of wood, but may also be made of metal, stone, or synthetic materials. Many benches have arm and back rests; some have no back rest and can be sat on from either side

The Office Chair

Function in its context: The office chair was strategically designed to increase the productivity of clerical employees by making it possible for them to remain sitting at their desks for long periods of time. A swiveling chair with casters allowed employees to remain sitting and yet reach a number of locations within their work area, eliminating the time and energy expended in standing

Materials and Form: The wooden saddle seat was designed to fit and support the body of a sitting employee, and the slatted back and armrests provided additional support to increase the employee’s comfort. Like modern chairs, many of these models were somewhat adjustable to provide the maximum comfort and thus the maximum working time.
